Nova Scotia Accessibility Design Guide

 

Grab bars have become a big change amongst many provinces in Canada. Nova Scotia is no exception, emphasizing sizing and addition bars added to shower, bathtub water closet and urinal areas.

 

BATHROOMS

 

  • Turning Circle:
    • 1500 mm (59.1”)
  • Stalls
    • 1500 mm (59.1”) square clear floor space in front of stall

 

WATER CLOSETS

 

  • Rear grab bar
    • Can be split into two 300 mm (11.8”) grab bars on each side of flush valve if needed

 

URINALS

 

  • Rim height *just wording adjustment
    • Less than 430 mm (16.9”)
  • Grab bars *just wording adjustment
    • 600 mm (23.7”) long

 

SHOWERS

 

  • Handshowers
    • Usable at 1200 mm (47.3”) and 2030 mm (79.9”) off the floor
      • Best accomplished with 900 mm (35.4”) slide bar
    • Minimum 1800 (59.1”) mm hose required

  • Peened or gripping surface Not required

  • Grab bars *just wording adjustment
    • 2 grab bars mounted vertically on each side of urinal 300 mm (11.9”) long

Newfoundland and Labrador are no exception to code changes for 2020. Below are the specifications you will need to modify your projects.

    • 285 mm (11.3”) to 305 mm (12”)
  • Minimum internal dimension:
    • Minimum 1700 mm (67”) by 1700 mm (67”)
  • Turning Circle:
    • 1500 mm (59.1”)
